Type of File Works Best?
When supplying artwork for use in the production of large graphics, a vector image
format is the best choice. A vector image is composed of lines and various
shapes. Example: a blueprint that consists of a collection of lines and
shapes. These types of images can be scaled to any size with very little effect on
An appropriate vector format is Adobe Illustrator in which the entire file has had the
path and fonts outlined.
When supplying photographs and images for large format digital printing, a raster image
works well. A raster image (like a photograph) is composed of individual pixels.
The file size of the image is determined by the number of pixels. These
images can be produced in programs like Adobe PhotoShop.
Raster images supplied for large format printing need special consideration. The
best possible results are achieved when the actual size of the file (in inches) is at
least ¼ the desired size of the finished product.
Raster images lose quality when they are changed from their original size. JPEG is
usually a better file format to use for photographs, especially photos of people, and for
images with subtle gradations. Examples of raster image file types are BMP, TIFF,
GIF, and JPEG files.
